I totally agree with the info-graphic. Bottled water is crazy. We all need to stop buying it.
I dont completely agree…. simply because of the kind of bottled water you buy…. carbon filters dont filter out fluoride….if our country would filter our tap water by reverse osmosis we would not need to buy bottled water……….. and flouride would not needed to add a to our water neither would u need to chlorinate the water to purify it.
Flouride is destructive to the body over time,,,,,
I never liked the taste of bottled water. I always thought that those who drink this crap, do so for a few reasons…
#1) They buy into the “Hazards” that the corporations throw out about all the harmful bacteria in tap.
#2) Status symbols (look everyone…I’m drinking healthy safe water free from carcinogens!)
#3) False sense of security
#4) My water tastes like bleach, sewer, etc.
Funny but this was never a problem until US corporations started airing ads that water was unsafe and contained fecal matter, cancer causing agents, benzene, etc..
The simple minded bought into this marketing ploy, so that these corporate pricks can rake in the cash by the typical fear mongering tactics used to manipulate the populous.
It worked without a hitch. Have you noticed that there aren’t many commercials bombarding the TV viewer about bottled water, since the discovery of filtered tap water filling them?
The misleading scumbags at Evian gave the impression that their water was scooped from mountain springs in France?! Yeah…right.
A few years back, a new company from Iceland claimed that their water is from glacier melt. Hmmmm… that would include 100,000 years of air pollutants also, including volcanic eruptions, dinosaur farts, the industrial revolution, etc. They had better hurry…the glaciers are receding!
Do you think that “Mountain Water” is safe as corporations want you to believe? How about the many biological entities that die next to or even IN a mountain spring? How about bird and animal droppings? How about decaying trees, limbs and even leaves?..these contain mold spores. How about the pollutants that fall in the form of Acid Rain?! Remember that?
You don’t hear all THAT from corporations?!
The late, great George Carlin said it best: “…F*ck ‘em…I like a few million carcinogens in my drinking water!” (while drinking NYC tap water out of a glass on stage)…
that’s MY stand “F*ck ‘em”, I’m drinking chlorinated, fluoridated tap water! At least I’m not giving it to some lying corporate prick, so he/she can line their pockets!
At the same time, I’m not polluting the planet w/unnecessary waste and I’m not utilizing the oil to produce such a waste.
Actually, people have been aware of and protesting flouridation in the water for as long as flouridation in water has been in use.
Decades. Search for flouride and the words halogen and fishbein, and you’ll see the criticism and its history.
I prefer sparkling water, so I buy it bottled – there’s no source of carbonated tap water. I could buy a kit to carbonate at home, but I haven’t got one yet.
Josh! Very interesting… I think in the states — totally true. However, after having just traveled in Latin America for 4 months… I am quite grateful for it — total pain, but a necesity in many regions due to unclean water, so… I don’t think it is completely evil : ). I think for me the principle here is — determine what an appropriate need is, then… only use it if you need it. — Very interesting though, thanks for always finding intriguing topics — hope all is well!
I have been using reusable bottles for years. Can’t stand to think of all that plastic ending in landfills, waterways, or that giant floating continent of trash in the Pacific Ocean. I have been a re cycler for as long as I can remember, and wish everyone would be responsible enough to do it!
PS – nothing tops good well water for taste with no chemical additives.
Good perspective & I think you’ve convinced me to cut down a lot on purchasing plastic bottles of water. At home I have a filtration system under the kitchen sink so I’ll follow your advice and fill a stainless steel container since it’s safer to leave in the car instead of the plastic bottle that bakes in the hot car and may release who-knows-what into the drinking water.
A water expert said to fill a pitcher with tap water and after chilling it in the fridge, it’ll taste fine.
Liked the comment that mentioned George Carlin. What a wonderful humorist who could put us in our place & we appreciated him doing just that! Miss that wacky guy!!!
Fascinating infographic. For a short period of time, I helped a water tank inspection and cleaning company with marketing and sales. Most states only require an inspection and do not require any sort of cleaning. Even when the inspection showed dangerous chemicals (like mercury!!!), a lot of cities still did not get a cleaning.
To my knowledge, Florida is the only state that requires cleaning (once every 5 years). Having seen the footage of the bottom of some of these tanks, I’m very hesitant to drink tap water without treating it. I’m all about using a filter or boiling the water before drinking it.
Jason – If you are interested, I would love to pass on some of the details of the inspections, cleaning, and just how truly nasty some tap water is (think over 12″ of sediment, dead birds, mercury, THF, Chloroform, and dozens of other cancer causing chemicals) drop me an e-mail. I have links to videos and lists of contaminates in all the major public water systems around the country.
If you think this is interesting you’ll really like Hydros Bottle.
They make the water bottle with the built in filter. Not only are they trying to reduce the harmful impact of bottled water but some of the profits from every bottle go towards getting clean water to people in need.
To help: spread the word with a “like” or a “share” on facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/hydrosbottle
Western consumers are quite literally ruining the world.
Stop it.
I quit drinking bottled water many years ago. But I won’t drink from the tap, either. Flouride is just another chemical I wish to avoid putting in my body. I have water delivered by Sparkletts and fill up my Sigg Water bottles from that. Now I’m wondering – is that bad, too?
As a person who works in the manufacture of chemicals etc, the 90% packaging stat doesn’t surprise me. In fact, the average cost of potable water makes me think that percentage is a little low.
i’m with shizra…when they stop fluoridating and chlorinating my water, i’ll stop buying bottled water. i can’t afford a reverse osmosis system right now, so bottled water is what i use.
ok… so why not request that we should stop drinking soda out of plastic bottles too? Read this article… http://www.ewg.org/chromium6-in-tap-water
